Injury and obesity

The world situation at the moment is critical: obesity is one of the most important social and health problems worldwide. Data like those from the World Health Organization leave us cold, since at least 2.8 million people die each year as a result of overweight or obesity. If we look at the studies of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), obesity in the U.S. is 38.2%. This circumstance worries us in AreaZero, so we want to contribute to change this situation, as well as motivate customers to take the step of being an active person.

This is why we consider it is relevant to review some important points when dealing with people with obesity, what habits are good for the customer? Which injuries occur the most? How to prevent them? We will answer all these questions below.

What habits are good for the customer?

Raising the customer’s awareness of the risks is a necessary action to offer a quality service, but it is not the only thing necessary, because the small changes will make the customer not to abandon, along with the training.

1. Walking. Training may not be enough. Starting by walking more often is a change that is needed and is achieved by changing routines such as going to work on foot or not taking the elevator, but going up the stairs. Every step counts and motivates.

2. Adequate diet. Without miracles, without labels, simply a diet adapted to the needs of the person with whom we work so that, in this way, it reaches its objectives. Without this, the possibility of increasing injuries is greater: by having a bad diet, the body will not have the nutrients needed to recover.

3. A personalized training. The important thing is to know the characteristics of the individual. Especially when dealing with a person with obesity, which will have to perform not only aerobic routines, but also strength. At first, the recommendation is to go slowly with activities where the person begins to move and to have a little more connection with the exercise.

4. You have to be careful with those activities in which there is impact, such as running, since the joints are going to receive an excess of load that might harm them. A clear example of this is when we tell someone to perform activities that require the action of running. With people with obesity, it is better working at a high rate than make them run, as we will get a high calorie consumption and less risk.

5. It is recommended to add strength exercises to the routine. It is about toning the large muscle groups during two or three sessions a week, always knowing what positions and techniques are appropriate to avoid injuries. We will also help to improve not only the tone and muscle strength, but will also affect metabolism.

What injuries occur the most?

Ligamentous lesions and tendonitis, in addition to joint discomfort such as knees and ankles, are relatively frequent in clients suffering from overweight and obesity. This is because the knees have to bear a much greater weight than it can bear. Moreover, it is possible to have alterations in hormone levels that accelerate the wear of cartilage, which increases the risk of degenerative joint disease, osteoarthritis.

Overloads usually occur when the customer tries to perform the exercise too quickly, so it is important to teach the person to use a good rhythm in the force jobs.

How does it originate?

  • Mistakes in the training. It happens when they try to get a lot of physical activity too fast, they can strain their muscles and cause an overload injury.

  • Mistakes in the technique. An incorrect technique can also have repercussions: if the way we perform exercises is not taken care of, we can subject certain muscles to an excess of tension and cause an overload injury.

What causes can lead to this type of injury?

  • Poor performance of the exercise..

  • Inappropriate clothing or footwear.

  • Lack of hydration.

  • Little rest..

  • Overexertion.

  • Lack of warm-up and/or stretch-up

How to prevent them from happening?

  • Correct equipment: make sure they wear shoes and clothing suitable for the activity you are going to perform.

  • Take your time: In case they are starting a new workout routine, avoid over-motivation and encompass more than the customer can. If you are going to change the intensity or duration, do it progressively.

  • Vary the routine with different workouts. Instead of focusing on one type of exercise, add variety to your training program. In addition, adding a variety of low-impact activities can help prevent overload injuries by allowing the body to use different muscle groups and not overload any particular group and unite it with dynamic and group activities that amuse the customer.

  • It is important to include muscle strengthening of the most important muscle groups in the arms, legs, and torso at least twice a week.

In case that the person indicates any kind of pain or discomfort for any possible injury, we will have to refer it to their doctor.

Before resuming physical activity, it is necessary to ensure that the client has had a medical check-up that verifies whether he has fully recovered strength, movement, flexibility and balance.

When returning to physical activity, pay special attention to them, so they do it with the appropriate technique to avoid future injuries.

In the end, this work requires being aware of many variables and updated with the latest information, from AreaZero you can count on us to update and receive quality training on this and many other topics. We are waiting for you, are you ready?
